The plot of L'imbécile (the fool), a royal and her subject locked in a deadly dance of betrayal and revenge, is shamelessly stolen from Verdi's opera Rigoletto, which, in turn, was adapted in 1851 from Victor Hugo's play Le roi s'amuse. Complex roles for women abound in this daring, gender-bent play. First production: Babes With Blades Theatre Company, Chicago. (2014).
“Trade in the shackles of morality for a pair of handcuffs, the play spits. 'Tis better to have loved brutally than to have lived boringly.”
